Dear Friends,
It is with great excitement that I introduce you to the first issue of Conservative Students for a Better Tomorrow’s newsletter, the Spirit of ’76. Thanks to the hard work of our Chief Financial Officer, Kyle H. Wilkins, along with help from our members and the support of people like you, we have started this CSBT publication. We hope to keep the Furman community informed about our events and bring you relevant commentary from our speakers and members.
At Furman, we just completed the final winter term. CSBT took full advantage of the term, offering five major events during the two months. All of our events were held in front of standing-room-only crowds and included high-profile speakers like Star Parker and Dr. Daniel Pipes.
Though we’ve already had far more events than College Democrats and College Republicans combined, we are not finished yet, as we have a number of exciting speakers lined up this spring, including Raymond Ibrahim, author of The Al-Qaeda Reader (April 14), and Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland (May 21).
Perhaps the biggest news from Furman is the upcoming appearance of Ann Coulter, brought by CSBT with help from several other groups. After the offensive, politically-charged drag show called the “Kinsey Sicks” last year, on which several “non-political” student groups spent thousands of dollars in mandatory student fees, we went to those same groups this year and asked them to co-sponsor Ann Coulter with us.
Surprisingly, the groups agreed to support the event, which threw the campus liberals into a fit. Showing their great “tolerance” for conservative speakers, the liberals launched an unprecedented and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to revoke the already limited money given to us by the student government.
Nevertheless, I am happy to announce that Ann Coulter, author of six consecutive New York Times bestsellers, will be coming to Furman on Wednesday, April 16. Her appearance is presented in association with the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, Furman University Student Activities Board and the Residential Life Council. The event will be held in McAlister Auditorium at 7:00 p.m., and it is free and open to the public. Check our Web site, www.furmancsbt.org, for more details. We hope to see you there!
Thanks again for your continued support of CSBT and its mission: “To provide a conservative vision by educating the Furman community and contributing to a vibrant discussion of ideas.”
